A marsh bird, the Little blue Heron nests in colonies in the United States, from California to New Jersey. An occasional visitor in the southernmost part of Québec and the Maritimes, it has a varied diet made up of fish and insects as well as amphibians and shrimp. The length of the Little Blue Heron is 50 to 74 cm and its average wingspan is 102 cm.

Oiseau de marais, l’aigrette bleue niche en colonies aux États-Unis, de la Californie au New Jersey. Visiteur occasionnel de l’extrême sud du Québec et des Maritimes, elle a un régime alimentaire varié qui se compose autant de poissons, d’insectes, d’amphibiens que d’écrevisses. L’aigrette bleue a une longueur variant de 50 à 74 cm et a une envergure moyenne de 102 cm.

Tringa melanoleuca  Grand Chevalier  /  Greater Yellowlegs

A nesting bird in the peat bogs of the boreal forest and the tundra, the Greater Yellowlegs has a territorial range that includes the northern Abitibi, Nouveau-Québec and Côte-Nord regions and the Île d’Anticosti. During the winter, it migrates toward the United States, where it finds warmth and food in the southern part of the country and along the seacoast. It feeds on crustaceans, small fish, worms and insects, which it finds in mud or in shallow waters. The length of the Greater Yellowlegs is 32 to 38 cm.

Oiseau nicheur des lacs et des tourbières de la forêt boréale et de la toundra, le grand Chevalier a pour territoire le nord de l’Abitibi, le Nouveau-Québec, la Côte-Nord et l’Île d’Anticosti. En hiver, il migre vers les États-Unis, où il trouve chaleur et nourriture au sud du pays et sur les côtes. Il s’alimente de crustacés, de petits poissons, de vers et d’insectes qu’il trouve dans la boue ou dans l’eau peu profonde. Le grand Chevalier a une longueur de 32 à 38 cm.

Sterna hirundo  Sterne pierregarin  /  Common Tern

The Common Tern captures its fish, its insects and its small crustaceans on the smooth surfaces of its freshwater and saltwater habitats. It nests throughout southern Québec all the way up to James Bay and along the seacoasts of the Maritimes. During the summer, it is found in Ontario and the Canadian Prairies. The length of the Common Tern is 33 to 41 cm and its average wingspan is 76 cm.

La sterne pierregarin capture ses poissons, ses insectes et ses petits crustacés à la surface de l’eau de ses habitats, les plans d’eau douce et salée. Elle niche dans tout le Québec méridional, et ce, jusqu’à la Baie-James, et le long des côtes des Maritimes. En été, elle est observée en Ontario et dans les prairies canadiennes. La sterne pierregarin a une longueur de 33 à 41 cm et une envergure moyenne de 76 cm.
