The Birds of America

September 27, 2009 by ab

Puffinus puffinus  Puffin des Anglais  /  Manx Shearwater

audubon_295

The Manx Shearwater nests mainly in the North Atlantic ocean. During the migration period, it is found in the gulf of the Saint Lawrence and sometimes even as far as the estuary, as well as in Fundy Bay and in the waters off Nova Scotia. Sensitive to the cold, it leaves North America for the winter and settles along the eastern seaboard of South America. Essentially a fish-eater, it feeds on fish that swim in schools, such as herring. It is also fond of squid and crustaceans. The length of the Manx Shearwater is 31 to 38 cm and its average wingspan is 84 cm.

Common in captivity, the Barnacle Goose nests in north-eastern Greenland. Originally from Europe, this species of goose does not regularly visit the American East Coast. Besides, it is rarely found in eastern Canada. The length of the Barnacle Goose is 69 cm.

Histrionicus  Arlequin plongeur  /  Harlequin Duck

audubon_297

Protected by the Migratory Birds Convention Act, the Harlequin Duck is on the way to extinction in eastern Canada. A nesting bird, it is found in eastern and western Canada, along torrents that flow in forests and rivers and along the seacoasts. Its diet is varied, and made up of larvae, black flies, crustaceans, and molluscs. The length of the Harlequin Duck is 38 to 45 cm.
