The Birds of America

Tringa solitaria  Chevalier solitaire  /  Solitary Sandpiper

audubon_289

The Solitary Sandpiper feeds in the shallow waters of wooded marshes, small lakes and beaver ponds. It feeds on the water insects, larvae, small cructaceans and small frogs that it finds in its territory, which is located in Québec’s median zone, between the Témiscamingue and the Côte-Nord regions. The length of the Solitary Sandpiper is 19 to 23 cm.

audubon_290

A nesting bird of the grassy, humid tundra, the Dunlin has a territorial range that includes Alaska, the northernmost North-West Territories, Greenland and northern Ontario and Manitoba. Passing through the regions of southern Québec and the Maritimes in the fall, it spends the winter along the American seaboards. It is fond of insects, spiders, worms and molluscs and feeds on seeds in the spring. The length of the Dunlin is 19 to 24 cm.

audubon_291

The Herring Gull is the most commonly found gull in the northern hemisphere. It nests in Québec and Canada as well as in the United States, in high locations and close to stretches of smooth water. Its population has not stopped growing since Audubon’s time. This situation is attributed to the proliferation of garbage and the wastage of commercial fishing. Omnivorous, it feeds on carrion, small fish, molluscs, insects, small mammals, fruits, eggs, and fledglings. The length of the Herring Gull is 59 to 66 cm and its average wingspan is 147 cm.
